Sanders was raised by his parents, Louis, and Rose Vinocur before they divorced in 1941. His father was a lawyer. After the divorce, his mother took him and his sister, Roberta, to Illinois and changed their name to Vanocur as she was still mad at her former husband.
Sander held American citizenship and had Russian Jewish ethnicity. He was enrolled at the Western Military Academy and graduated in 1946. Later, he graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Communications. He further studied at the London School of Economics in 1951 and 1952.

He was the last surviving panelist who took the role of questioning Senator John F. Kennedy and Vice President Richard M. Nixon in Americas first televised presidential debate, on September 26, 1960.

He also covered the Kennedy White House, accompanied the first lady Jacqueline Kennedy on many tours, U.S. military involvement in Vietnam and also covered the Civil Right Movement in America. He interviewed the famous personality of the ’60s, Martin Luther King Jr. Likewise, in 1963 he took an in-depth interview with the President F. Kennedy moments before his death and later covered the news after his assassination.
