Sander “Sandy” Vanocur was a television newsman and a longtime NBC News correspondent. He played a significant role in reporting significant historic political event ranging from the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement; President John F. Kennedy rise to power and political campaign and his assassination.

Sander was born as Alexander Vinocur on January 8, 1928, in Cleveland, Ohio and was 91 at the time of his death. Sanders was raised by his parents, Louis, and Rose Vinocur before they divorced in 1941. His father was a lawyer. After the divorce, his mother took him and his sister, Roberta, to Illinois and changed their name to Vanocur as she was still mad at her former husband. 

Sander held American citizenship and had Russian Jewish ethnicity. He was enrolled at the Western Military Academy and graduated in 1946. Later, he graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Communications. He further studied at the London School of Economics in 1951 and 1952.

Sander Vanocur passed away on September 16, 2019, after long-suffering from Dementia. The television newsman and a longtime NBC correspondent took his final breath at his home in Santa Barbara, California Monday at age 91. 

He was the last surviving panelist who took the role of questioning Senator John F. Kennedy and Vice President Richard M. Nixon in Americas first televised presidential debate, on September 26, 1960.

Sander started his career on television after joining NBC News in the late 1950s. Throughout his career, he reported many of history significant event. He served as a panelist for the first presidential debate to be televised in America. 

He also covered the Kennedy White House, accompanied the first lady Jacqueline Kennedy on many tours, U.S. military involvement in Vietnam and also covered the Civil Right Movement in America. He interviewed the famous personality of the ’60s, Martin Luther King Jr. Likewise, in 1963 he took an in-depth interview with the President F. Kennedy moments before his death and later covered the news after his assassination.

Sadly, his son, Nicholas, passed away in 2015.
