Who is Jofra Archer?

Jofra Archer is a Barbadian-born English cricketer who plays for Sussex County Cricket Club. He recently made his international debut for England in May 2019 and played in the Cricket World Cup later in the same month.

Born in 1995 in Barbados, Jofra celebrates his birthday on April 1, which makes his age 24 years old. He is the son of Frank Archer and Joelle Waithe. His father is from England and his mother from Barbados. He belongs to mixed ethnicity and the Christian religion.

He attended Hilda Skeene Primary School, Christ Church Foundation and also attended Dulwich College. 

Archer faced many problems during the initial phase of his career as he was not eligible to play for England until the winter of 2022 despite born to an English father and holding a British passport. Archer was to complete a seven-year residency period but, luckily, in November 2018, the ECB announced a change to its rule, reducing the eligibility period from seven years to three to bring it into line with ICC regulations.

Early Profession and Career

Jofra made his domestic career debut on 8 July 2016 for Sussex during Pakistan’s tour of England. He made his List A debut in the 2016 Royal London One-Day Cup against Gloucestershire. Moreover, he was bought by Rajasthan Royals in the 2018 IPL auction for £800,000. Jofra earned the title for the man of the match on 22 April 2018, after he took three wickets against the Mumbai Indians. Likewise, he also achieved a hat-trick in the final over of the game during the 2018 t20 Blast.

Regarding his international career, Jofra made his ODI debut for England against Ireland on 3 May 2019. Likewise, he made his Twenty20 Internationa debut for England against Pakistan on 5 May 2019. Archer was not included in England’s preliminary squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup though. Andrew Flintoff, a former England cricketer, stated that he would drop anyone from the team squad to include Archer. Consequently, Archer was named in the final fifteen-man team after England finalized their squad for the World Cup.
