Who was Elijah Cummings?

Elijah Cummings was an American Politician and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for Maryland’s 7th congressional district. He was a member of the Democratic Party and chair of the Committee on Oversight and Reform. 

Cause of Death and Funeral

Elijah Cummings passed away on early Thursday (17th October 2019) after suffering from complications from longstanding health challenges at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was 68 years old. Before his death, he underwent surgery to repair his aortic-valve in May 2017 because of which he was absent from Capitol Hill for two months. Again in July 2017, he underwent another surgery-related infection but returned to work. 

His death brought sadness among the American politicians and the members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Maryland Senator released a statement stating he “leaves an irreplaceable void in our hearts.” A CNN political analyst, April Ryan, noted that the US lost,” a fighter on Capitol Hill.”

As of now, there is no information and news regarding his funeral. 

Elijah Cummings: Birthday, Family, Facts

Elijah was born on 18th January 1951, in Baltimore and was 68 at the time of his death. He was the son of Ruth Elma and Robert Cummings. He was the third child among his seven siblings. Elijah came from Afro-American ethnicity and held American nationality. 

Upon graduating from high school with honors, Elijah enrolled at Howard University and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. He became the student government treasurer and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Later, he got the Juris Doctor degree from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1976. 

Early Profession and Career

Elijah started his professional career with the help of Lena King Lee, who helped him raise funds and begin his political career. He became the Chairman of the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland and also the first Black man in the history of Maryland to be named Speaker Pro Tempore. Elijah also worked on different commissions of Baltimore City, including the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, and was once the Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus during the 108th United States Congress.

Moreover, in 2014, he introduced the bipartisan bill “Presidential and Federal Records Act Amendments of 2014,” which was later signed into law by President Barack Obama. He also introduced the “All Circuit Review Extension Act” and supported the “Smart Savings Act.” Likewise, in 1996, he won the General Elections by defeating Republican candidate Kenneth Kondner with 83.5% of the vote. Since his win, Elijah has won nine elections and has never dropped less than 69% vote.
